The family of Mike Mate Maretić shares with the Vancouver Croatian Community his passing on August 11th, 2025. Born in Podumci (Sibenik region) in 1933, Mike was a builder in every sense of the word.
For over fifty years, Mike was a master carpenter, building homes in the Metro Vancouver area for many, including fellow Croatians. He also employed many newly immigrated Croatians, always ready to offer his compatriots an opportunity to start their lives in Canada.
Equally, Mike was a builder with the Vancouver Croatian Community. He was a manager of the men’s soccer team and helped guide the team to success in the 1965-66 season. He continued in many roles for the club into the 1970s. A personal proud moment for Mike was helping to found the Vancouver Croatia Juvenile Soccer Club in 1975. His efforts and dedication were a pivotal part of building an enduring Croatian identity in Metro Vancouver.
Mike is survived by his wife Carole, his children Carmen, Mark, and Peter, and his grandchildren Stephanie and Matthew. He was predeceased by his youngest son, Karl.
